What is Counselling?

Counselling and therapy, at their most basic, are the acts of talking to someone who is trained to listen, help and support you, in a safe and confidential environment. It allows you to discuss your problems, thoughts and feelings without being judged. By doing so you can uncover a deeper understanding about what lies at the heart of any issues you may be experiencing and form a plan of how to bring about positive change within your life.

Counselling can help with a variety of issues such as:

Abuse

Addiction

Anxiety

Bereavement

Depression

Identity

Mental health issues

Relationships

Self harm

Sexuality

Suicidal thoughts

Trauma

Stress

Counselling can be long or short term and is focused on what you want to bring to each session, with an overarching goal in mind to work towards.

There doesn't always have to be something "wrong" for someone to come to counselling. Often people come simply because they want help to grow as a person, to make some changes in their life or just to be able to live their life in a fuller and more rewarding manner.

How can counselling help?

Counselling can help in a variety of different ways. It provides a safe space that is completely confidential and dedicated entirely to you, with the freedom to talk about your thoughts, feelings and actions. In today's busy world, having your own little window of time can be very rewarding.

While we may have have friends and family who we share our issues with, sometimes we hold back on saying what's really going on for us because we're afraid of how this will be received, how the other person will respond or what they will think of us. Counselling removes these barriers by creating a non-judgemental, supportive and respectful environment. You will be listened to by an unbiased therapist who will not only accept you as you are, but value you as an individual. Having someone neutral to talk to who is outside of the situation you're in, can help bring perspective.

The journey of therapy is one of self discovery, and your counsellor will help you to better understand yourself, your experiences and the patterns of behaviour that may be present. With this new understanding you will be better equipped to make positive changes in your life, learn the skills to cope with troublesome situations, emotions and behaviours, helping to navigate  through the difficulties and being able to live a more fulfilling life.

What does Compass Rose offer?

I offer one to one counselling sessions, located on Vernon Street in the centre of Derby and at Leen Valley House in Bulwell, Nottingham. I offer sessions for adults and children aged 16 and over. These are an hour long at a time and are an opportunity for you to come and discuss any issue that you might be facing in confidence.

 

The initial consultation session is free of charge, and allows you to come and find out a bit more about how I am able to help you in understanding the issues at hand and how we can begin to work together to make any changes you may wish to make in your life. It also allows for you to check out if counselling is right for you at this time and to see how comfortable you feel working with me as your therapist.

Currently my availability is limited to a few evening slots during the week, so please get in touch regarding availability.
